Serviceberry
Serviceberry is one of the most versitle ornamental trees for landscapes. It is a large multi-stemmed shrub or small tree with a rounded crown and many small branches. In the spring before the leaves emerge Serviceberry blooms with white pendulous 2-4″ long flowers. In summer the leaves are a medium to dark green and the tree produces an edible berry that rivals blueberries in taste. The birds however, also love the berries so you have to be quick before they get picked clean. Serviceberry’s fall foliage color ranges from apricot-orange to deep dusty red. It is one of the finest small trees for fall color. In winter, with its smooth gray streaked bark and fine branches, this tree has an understated elegance.
