About Rolling Meadows
Orrin Ford was the first person to claim a piece of land in what is now Rolling Meadows when he acquired 160 acres (0.65 km2) all the way back in 1836. This area was known as Plum Grove and slowly, other farming families moved in, many originating from Vermont. By the 1840s, the settlers had built a dam across Salt Creek and occupied the entire Plum Grove region.
In 1850, Plum Grove became part of Palatine Township with German immigrants arriving shortly thereafter. Salem Evangelical Church was constructed in 1862 and its 40-foot-square (12 m) cemetery still exists at Kirchoff and Plum Grove roads nowadays.
Enter 1927: H.D. “Curly” Brown purchases 1,000 acres (4.0 km2) of land in the area with hopes to build a golf course and establish a racetrack close by it. The plan is picked up in the early 1950s by Kimball Hill who procured the land intended for golf course development and started selling homes after advertising their floor plans in Chicago Tribune – despite protests from neighboring Arlington Heights who wanted to buy that same piece of land for estate residences instead. However, potential buyers of Kimball Hill’s homes persuaded Cook County Board to change zoning regulations so that Hill could proceed with his project as planned.
