The Best Time to Start Planning Your Oak Brook IL Garden

Are you wondering when to plant your garden or vegetable seeds in Illinois? Generally, it’s best to plant seeds approximately six weeks ahead of the latest frost date. For areas such as Bloomingdale and Carpentersville, the latest frost date typically falls between May 21 and May 31.

By planning your planting schedule accordingly, you can ensure your plants have the best chance of thriving. So, mark your calendars and get ready to plant your garden or vegetable seeds for a bountiful harvest in Illinois.

Starting seeds is an easy process, and you don’t need to be a scientist to do it! With a few simple and affordable tools, you can give your garden a head start. You will need:

A seed starting tray that comes with a plastic cover At least one grow light (A timer is optional, but it’s highly recommended) Labels to identify your seedlings A seed starter heat mat (Optional, depending on the plant) All of these materials are readily available at any of our garden center locations. If you plan to grow multiple trays of seedlings, it’s recommended that you use one grow light per tray.

Starting Your Seeds Seeds require moisture and warmth to sprout properly, so your first step will be to provide them with a welcoming environment.

How to Begin

Begin by filling your tray with water until all of the cells are evenly moist, but not saturated. Add water gradually until the soil is damp, similar to a wet sponge—avoid turning the soil into mud!

Next, plant your seeds in each cell according to the recommended depth on the seed packet. Since some seeds may not germinate, and some seedlings may not grow as well, plant a few seeds in each cell. Later, you can remove the weaker seedlings.

Creating the right environment for your seeds to grow is key to a successful garden. To get started, you’ll need a few simple items: a seed starting tray with a plastic cover, at least one grow light (a timer is optional but recommended), labels for your seedlings, and a seed starter heat mat, depending on the plant. All of these items can be found at our garden center locations. If you plan to grow multiple trays of seedlings, consider using one grow light per tray.

Once you have your supplies, it’s time to start planting. Begin by adding water to your tray until the soil is moist but not sopping wet. Plant a few seeds per cell, as some may not germinate or grow as strong. Make sure to label each cell and cover the tray with a plastic lid. Some seeds require gentle heat to germinate properly, which can be provided by placing a heat mat beneath the tray. Avoid using direct sunlight, which can cause the tray to overheat.

Monitor the tray for changes over the next few days, keeping the cover on as much as possible to maintain moisture. Once the seeds have sprouted, remove the cover and move the tray to a sunny spot. Use your grow light for 14-16 hours per day, keeping it about four inches above the soil line. With a little patience and care, your seedlings will be off to a great start!
